John Lesson 12 Day 4

John Lesson 12 Day 4 ~ John 8:31-59

9-  a. So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free. John 8:36 AMP

Freedom—delivered from the bondage and dominion of sin. (Barnes)

A Messianic prophecy announcing freedom to all captives, fulfilled by Jesus

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 61:1 ESV

How to receive this freedom (see 10. c.)

b.  Freedom from condemnation

Freedom from condemnation and the feeling that I must earn this freedom.

I learned about God’s love and grace. I’m a child of God. God doesn’t disown me because he thinks I’m a disappointment. He has good plans for me. He lovingly guides me, sustains me, encourages me, picks me up over and over, finds me when I get lost, rescues me when I get entangled, leads me back to the right path, lights that path one step at a time, prays for me, and so much more.

10- a. The Jews boasted, “Abraham is our father”.

…and do not presume to say to yourselves [as a defense], ‘We have Abraham for our father [so our inheritance assures us of salvation]’; for I say to you that from these stones, God is able to raise up children (descendants) for Abraham. Matthew 3:9 AMP

My word has no place [to grow] in you [and it makes no change in your heart]. John 8:37b AMP

That is, you do not embrace my doctrine, or it exerts no influence over you. The original word conveys the notion that there was no room for his doctrine in their minds. It met with obstructions, and did not penetrate into their hearts. They were so filled with pride, and prejudice, and false notions, that they would not receive his truth; and as they had not his truth or spirit, and could not bear it, they sought to kill him. Barnes

Jesus was and is the Holy Son of God—the creator—the Savior—the Deliverer.

The Jews were the descendants promised to Abraham by the God whose Son they now wanted to kill.

b. Satan was a murderer from the beginning—

John 8:44-45 (BBE)
44  You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.
45  But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.

Genesis 3

Satan lied to Eve causing her to doubt God’s truthfulness and loving kindness toward his creations. He said, “You won’t die!…God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God…”

Romans 3:10-18 (cited from various passages in Psalms, Proverbs, Jeremiah, and Isaiah)

No one is righteous.

No one understands.

No one seeks God.

They turned away and became useless — worthless.

No one does good.

They habitually deceive with their tongues.

Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness (poison).

They rush to commit murder.

Destruction and misery always follow them.

They don’t know where to find peace.

There is no fear of God [and His awesome power] before their eyes.

c. Jesus’ death is our key to freedom

Hebrews 2:14-15

Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death.  MSG

I am a child of God—a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven—an heir and joint heir with Jesus.

I didn’t earn this right because of good behavior, good works, or my family tree. It’s only because I received the gift of life and freedom through believing Jesus is the Lamb of God sacrificed and resurrected for me.
