John 16:16-24

8.  “In a little while you will no longer see Me, and again after a short while you will see Me.”  John 16:16 (AMP)

You will no longer see me—

Jesus was speaking of his coming death (the following day).

They would not see him for three days while he was in the tomb.

After a little while, you will see me. (You will look at me with a discerning sight. Wuest)

Jesus’ death wasn’t the end. It was a new beginning.

After those three days, he would rise from the dead and appear to them and others many times before he ascended to the Father.

9.  Jesus reassured his disciples

you will weep and grieve [in great mourning]

your sorrow will be turned into joy.

for now you are in grief

I will see you again, and [then] your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away from you your [great] joy.

whatever you ask the Father in My name [as My representative], He will give you. So ask and keep on asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be full and complete.

Jesus reassured the disciples that “their joy would be great and permanent knowing that the atonement was made, the victory gained, and (the) kingdom of heaven opened to all believers.” (Adam Clarke)

10.  When I have questions

I regularly ask the Lord to lead me into all truth. When I have questions about something in scripture, I’m likely to read other versions. In preparing these lessons, I consult at least five.

If I still have questions, I consult the references related to that verse or verses while leaning into the Spirit for guidance. I also rely on a quickening to alert me when I’ve found a satisfying answer.

When the disciples didn’t understand what Jesus said about seeing him again, some of them asked each other what he meant.

Jesus read their hearts and minds as he often did. He knew their questions even though he didn’t hear their conversation.

Isaiah 11:1-3 (AMP)

And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and strength,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the [reverential and obedient] fear of the Lord
And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, (one translator renders it this way—”and his smelling is with the fear of Yahweh “)
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
Nor make decisions by what His ears hear;
