Answers to BSF Bible Study Questions John Lesson 24 Day 4
Jesus before Annas and Caiaphas, the High Priest
9. Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, high priest at the time
Annas knew full well who Jesus was, what he taught, and who his disciples were. He probably asked those questions for the same reason the other Pharisees asked questions—he hoped to catch Jesus saying something incriminating.
What historians know about Annas:
Probably his house was nearest to them, and he had great authority and influence in the Jewish nation. He had been himself a long time high-priest; he had had five sons who had successively enjoyed the office of high-priest, and that office was now filled by his son-in-law. It was of importance, therefore, to obtain his sanction and counsel in their work of evil. (Barnes, Adam Clarke)
It is likely that Annas was chief of the Sanhedrin, and that it was to him in that office that Christ was first brought. Some think that Annas was still high priest, and that Caiaphas was only his deputy, though he did the principal part of the business, and that it as because of this that he is called high priest. (Adam Clarke)
Josephus, a first-century historian, wrote that Caiaphas was deposed from being high priest by the Roman governor Vitellius (The Antiquities of the Jews, Book 18, Chapter 4, Section 3) shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus. (Andrew Wommack)
10. Jesus knew the Jews aren’t running a real trial.
They intended to kill Jesus long before. Jesus also knew their plot which involved Judas and thirty pieces of silver.
They perceived Jesus as not respecting the position of the high priest, but they committed the greater sin in not respecting the Son of God, the one whom the high priest was supposed to represent. Jesus’ high priesthood was infinitely higher than Caiaphas’. It was actually Caiaphas and all the Sanhedrin who were in danger of being struck by God for treating His High Priest (Jesus) the way they were. (Andrew Wommack)
