John Lesson 3 Day 5 Day 6

John 2:23-25 ~ John Lesson 3 Day 5 Day 6

11—a. Jesus’ disciples were His followers, pupils, and friends.

The many who believed at the Passover Festival believed Jesus was the Messiah because of the signs he performed. They were new converts.

John 2:11 MSG “This act in Cana of Galilee was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of his glory. And his disciples believed in him.”

John 2:23 ESV  “Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.”

b. Superficial faith

They believed him to be the promised Messiah, but did not believe in him to the salvation of their souls: for we find, from the following verse, that their hearts were not at all changed, because our blessed Lord could not trust himself to them. Adam Clarke

superficially, struck merely by “the miracles He did.” Of these we have no record. Jamieson-Faussett-Brown

Many Americans have a superficial belief in God. They believe God exists. They may even believe Jesus is the Son of God and died on the cross for their sins. But they haven’t recognized they need a Redeemer, and they haven’t committed themselves to Him. They aren’t Jesus’ followers, pupils, and friends.

12—Jesus knows our hearts

The word “PISTEUO” translated as “entrust, commit, or trust” Himself to them, is the same Greek word translated as “believed” in the previous references to the disciples and the others at the Passover Festival. Jesus did not commit Himself to those who had only a superficial belief simply because of the signs they saw Him doing. It reminds me of the words Jesus spoke after He fed the 5000, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.” John 6:26 NLT

Day 6 Review John 2:1-25

13—What I learned this week:

  • The sequence of events and the locations Jesus traveled.
  • The word “disciples” doesn’t always mean all twelve of them.
  • When Jesus called His mother “woman”, it was a sign of honor and respect.
  • Wedding celebrations lasted seven days.
  • This wedding was probably a family member. That’s why Mary stepped in to help with the wine situation.
