John Lesson 9 Day 3 ~ John 6:28-29
6- The people asked, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” ESV
Jesus answered, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” ESV
I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. Vs 2
They cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. Vs 4
The law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands. Vs 5
It is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. Vs 10
The Jews were very zealous about their religion, but that wasn’t enough. It’s not enough just to believe; people have to believe the truth. Even those who are sincere can be sincerely wrong. Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Andrew Wommack
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The Greek scholar Kenneth S. Wuest translated this verse, “For by grace have you been saved in time past completely, through faith, with the result that your salvation persists through present time; and this (salvation) is not from you as a source.”
So too, faith, if it does not have works [to back it up], is by itself dead [inoperative and ineffective]. AMP
This type of works is fruit produced by faith. Works can’t bring us into a right relationship with God, but a right relationship with God produces works of faith.
7- a. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.
b. I keep slipping back into the wrong kind of works mindset.
Like believing I can earn God’s favor. Or that I should try. Or that I need to. He already proved His love in the grandest gesture of all eternity.
