Revelation Lesson 11 Day 5 2 Peter 3

2 Peter 3

13.  a.  Peter reminded and encouraged those who read his letters to–

  • Be encouraged by remembering what the prophets and Jesus said about their future.
  • Pursue growth in godliness which brings peace.
  • Don’t be led astray by the ignorant and unstable.
  • Grow in grace and understanding of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

b.  Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ–

The Jews who didn’t believe in Jesus Christ mocked and scoffed at the truth. They followed their own desires without taking Jesus’ promise of judgment seriously.

c.  The unbelievers had forgotten —

…that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water.

They also forgot he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. NLT

14.  Timing of the day of the Lord

Many have tried to make 2 Peter 3:8 into a prediction about when Jesus would return. Peter is quoting from Psalm 90:4

For a thousand years in your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past,
or as a watch in the night. ESV

Peter is saying time is of little value or importance to God. But He would keep His promise.

Jesus said His coming judgment (see yesterday’s post) would occur during that generation. The day of the Lord – the devastation and destruction of Jerusalem, the priesthood, the temple, and their entire religious system occurred around AD 70.

God delayed judgment because He is patient and merciful. He didn’t want anyone to perish. He allowed time for repentance.

15.  a.  I don’t believe I’m resisting the truth.

I’m actively seeking the truth.

I do wonder if this line of questioning is beneficial. It certainly isn’t encouraging. Or valid, in my view.

b.  I’ve learned–

I’m an avid seeker of truth.

The assumptions and focus on judgment and condemnation of participants in this Bible study leave me feeling icky. I don’t want anyone to perish either, but I doubt anyone actively studying the Bible in BSF falls in that category.

No believer should live under condemnation or fear judgment because “there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” NLT Because we belong to him, the power of His life-giving Spirit has freed us from the power of sin that leads to death.
