9. a. The angel explained the mystery of the woman and the beast.
The beast you saw was once alive but isn’t now. And yet he will soon come up out of the bottomless pit and go to eternal destruction. And the people who belong to this world, whose names were not written in the Book of Life before the world was made, will be amazed at the reappearance of this beast who had died. NLT
The seven heads of the beast represent the seven hills where the woman rules.
They also represent seven kings.
Five kings have already fallen, the sixth now reigns, and the seventh is yet to come, but his reign will be brief.
“The scarlet beast that was, but is no longer, is the eighth king. He is like the other seven, and he, too, is headed for destruction.
The ten horns of the beast are ten kings who have not yet risen to power. They will be appointed to their kingdoms for one brief moment to reign with the beast.
They will all agree to give him their power and authority.
b. Their goal
Together they will go to war against the Lamb
c. Who will win the war?
The Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings. And his called and chosen and faithful ones will be with him.
d. My confidence
For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 AMP
- I am on the winning side. The Lamb is the Lord of all lords. My King is the King of all kings.
- His called, chosen and faithful ones will be with Him.
- I am one of His called, chosen and faithful ones.
10. Contrast between descriptions
(This question confused me. I hope I’ve figured out what it’s asking.)
The Lord God Almighty in Revelation 1:4, 8; and 4:8
…the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come (NLT)
…was once alive but isn’t now. And yet he will soon come up out of the bottomless pit and go to eternal destruction. (NLT)
11. a. Meaning of the Greek word translated as wisdom in Revelation 17:9
The intelligence evinced [to show (something) clearly] in discovering the meaning of some mysterious number or vision. Strongs #4678
It appears that John needed wisdom because the mystery was not easy to understand. The angel explained what the symbols represented.
b. Getting wisdom
The specific wisdom referenced in Revelation 17:9 is the type Daniel had. He could interpret dreams and other signs like the writing on the wall.
There are many types of wisdom. “The shade of meaning in which the word is taken must be discovered from the context in every particular case.” (Bible Hub online Greek resource)
- One way to get wisdom is to study the book of proverbs.
- Another way is to ask for and seek wisdom, especially for specific situations.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. James 1:5 NLT
For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 NLT
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Proverbs 9:10 NLT
Proverbs 4:7 in the Amplified explains “get wisdom” as “actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation”
I read in The Table and the Dream something about Solomon’s wisdom I’d never noticed before. In a dream, Solomon asked God for wisdom—wisdom to apply the gift he already had! God gave him the gift before he was born.
David acknowledged Solomon’s wisdom in 1 Kings 2:6 and 1 Kings 2:9.
Solomon valued the gift God had already given him. He asked to step into what he already was and received the clarity he needed to accomplish everything he was asked to accomplish and more. Jeremy Mangerchine
