Hanging Gardens of Babylon – One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Nebuchadnezzar dreams disturbing dreams but cannot remember them. He is so troubled, he cannot sleep.
He gives orders to summon the diviner-priests, mediums, sorcerers, and Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams.
6. a. Daniel gave all the glory and praise to God for revealing the king’s dream and its interpretation to him in a night vision.
Blessed be the name of God,
forever and ever.
He knows all, does all:
He changes the seasons and guides history,
He raises up kings and also brings them down,
he provides both intelligence and discernment,
He opens up the depths, tells secrets,
sees in the dark—light spills out of him!
God of all my ancestors, all thanks! all praise!
You made me wise and strong.
And now you’ve shown us what we asked for.
You’ve solved the king’s mystery.
The image in the dream symbolizes four successive kingdoms that would rule the known world.
- The Babylonian Empire (at that time, Nebuchadnezzar’s empire)
- The Medes and Persians
- The Greek Empire under Alexander the Great
- The Roman Empire
God raises up kings and brings them down. Their kingdoms and positions are in God’s hands, not their own.
God is the one who gives wisdom, knowledge and discernment.
He is the light that reveals deep and hidden things to men.
b. Praise-worthy current event in my own life
We went through a rough time with my dad during the last year and a half. His physical and mental condition caused him frustration and us much physical and emotional energy.
My brother and I asked God for direction. Dad’s mobility improved enough that we could set up a living arrangement that works better for everyone. We pray for continued wisdom in caring for him.
7. a. The Kingdoms of this world vs. the Kingdom of God Daniel 2:29-45
God knows the future.
Jesus is the stone cut out of the mountain by God, not by human hands. He smashed the Roman Empire in fulfillment of Daniel’s prophetic vision.
God’s kingdom is so much greater. In comparison, the others are worthless.
The worldly empires in the vision ruled the known world. “But the Lord’s kingdom is literally over all the earth and every single person. None of these other kingdoms could ever boast of that.”¹
One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?”
Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you. Luke 17:20-21 NLT
He will be great,
be called ‘Son of the Highest.’
The Lord God will give him
the throne of his father David;
He will rule Jacob’s house forever—
no end, ever, to his kingdom. Luke 1:33 MSG
b. We are so blessed to live in the Kingdom of God Age.
Emmanuel, God is with us.
As I’m trying to write, this song is rising up inside my spirit.
That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead.
Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.
