Romans Lesson 6 Day 3
My answers to BSF study questions
Richard Dawkins, an atheist who is well-known for his criticism of creationism, intelligent design, and religion in general, defines faith as “blind trust, in the absence of evidence, even in the teeth of evidence.”
The phrase keep the faith is used in a secular way.
It means “to continue to believe in, trust, or support someone or something when it is difficult to do so. Example: The team has been playing poorly, but its devoted fans have kept the faith.”
Faith in the Bible
I googled “types of faith in the Bible” and found articles titled, Seven Types of Faith, Three Kinds of Faith (in the book of James), Two Kinds of Faith, Three Main Levels of Faith, and so on.
Romans 3:27 and Hebrews 11:1 use the same Greek word πίστις, pronounced pistis.
Belief, trust, and loyalty to a person or thing. Christians find their security and hope in God as revealed in Jesus Christ, and say “amen” to that unique relationship to God in the Holy Spirit through love and obedience as expressed in lives of discipleship and service. Bakers Evangelical Dictionary
Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title-deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]. Hebrews 11:1 AMP
7. a. Hebrews 11
A right relationship with God isn’t a DIY project. We can’t make it happen by doing or saying all the “right things” or doing enough good deeds. It’s only by faith in something we can’t see with our natural eyes.
The hall of faith
“By an act of faith, Abel brought a better sacrifice to God than Cain. It was what he believed, not what he brought, that made the difference. That’s what God noticed and approved as righteous. After all these centuries, that belief continues to catch our notice.” MSG
Enoch skipped death completely.
“Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. . . Noah became intimate with God.” MSG
Abraham obeyed God by leaving behind everything familiar. He didn’t even know where he was going. “By an act of faith, he lived in the country promised him, lived as a stranger camping in tents.” MSG
“Isaac and Jacob did the same, living under the same promise.” MSG
Barren Sarah got pregnant even though she and her husband were old because she believed God’s promise.
In obedience, Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. Such an amazing act of faith.
Moses’ parents in defiance of Pharaoh hid him for three months.
Israel walked through the Red Sea on dry ground.
Rahab, the Jericho harlot, hid the spies.
The most amazing thing about this list—we know their backstory. None of the lack of faith parts are mentioned.
All of them were successful because of their faith.
God, Your grace is amazing!
