Romans Lesson 8 Day 4
My answers to BSF study questions
8. a. This is what we were like:
Weak, helpless, powerless — asthenēs (Vines) — Feeble, Impotent, Sick, Sickly, Sickness, Weak, Weakened, Weaker, Weakness
Enemies (from Romans 5:10) — echthros (Strong’s) Root: from a primary echtho (to hate), hateful (passively, odious, or actively, hostile)
At just the right time, Christ died for all.
That’s good news because we were in that same condition. God knows that and loves us anyway.
Notice the terms that Paul used to describe us before the transformation of the new birth. We were weak (this verse), ungodly (this verse), sinners (Romans 5:8), and enemies (Romans 5:10). The Lord didn’t save us because we deserved it; it was an act of grace. (Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary.)
Thank God, we don’t have to fix ourselves first!
b. Only by grace
At the age of 5, I was already aware of my selfish, rebellious tendencies. I’m thankful I heard the good news. Jesus loves me so much, He died to become an open door. He forgives me now.
It’s like my old nature made me radioactive with sin. Jesus’ blood provides the decontamination shower.
9. The reasons for God’s love are found in Him, not in us. (Guzik)
Jesus is the only way, the only truth, and the only life. No one can get to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6 paraphrased)
No other path recognizes our utter inability to do it ourselves and provides the way.
No other “god”, guru, or philosopher loves us unconditionally. No other “god” sacrificed his son for us.
