Revelation Lesson 28 Day 5 and Day 6
10. Jesus’ instructions to His followers before He ascended to heaven
- Go out and teach His instructions to everyone we meet, far and near, in the practice of all Jesus instructed us.
- In the same way I loved you, you love one another.
- Be cheerful no matter what.
- Pray all the time.
- Thank God no matter what happens.
- Don’t suppress the Spirit.
- Don’t stifle those who have a word from the Master.
- Don’t be gullible.
- Eat the meat and spit out the bones. (I heard someone put it that way.)
- Be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.
- Be alert and fully sober.
- Set your hope on grace.
- Do not conform to your former evil desires.
- Be holy, because He is holy.
- Live holy and godly lives
- Make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
That’s quite a challenging list. Thankfully, He sent the Holy Spirit as He promised. He said we would receive power after the Holy Spirit came upon us. (Acts 1:8)
He is our supernatural teacher, counselor, helper, the source of spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit and more.
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Phil 1:6 NLT
Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” (Emphasis added)
John 13:31-36 MSG
When he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him, God’s glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified—glory all around!
“Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I’m telling you: ‘Where I go, you are not able to come.’
“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”
Simon Peter asked, “Master, just where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can’t now follow me where I’m going. You will follow later.” (Emphasis added)
Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.
Don’t suppress the Spirit, and don’t stifle those who have a word from the Master. On the other hand, don’t be gullible. Check out everything, and keep only what’s good. Throw out anything tainted with evil. (Emphasis added)
Hebrews 12:28 NLT
Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. (Emphasis added)
1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
2 Peter 3:10-14 NIV
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
11. Instructions that need work in my life
I’m asking the Holy Spirit to help me
—be thankful. Always.
—love others the way He loves me. Remember He isn’t critical. So I shouldn’t be either.
12. Thinking about heaven was a good exercise.
It got me thinking about that phrase in the Lord’s Prayer, “on earth as it is in heaven.” When I wrote about how we will all get along and see each other as perfect, it convicted me. I’ve been thinking about it since then.
If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you’ve probably noticed that you even missed some of their undesirable traits. I know that’s happened to me. What if we learned to love each other that way now? On earth as it is in heaven.
