Romans Lesson 11 Day 5
My answers to BSF study questions
11. Secular ideas about freedom
- Freedom of speech
- Debt free
- Lots of money — Financial independence
- Work from home
- Be your own boss
- Early retirement
- Traveling around the world
- Escape a bad relationship
- Equality of race, religion, gender, age, nationality, financial status, familial status
- Legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage
- No taxes
None of the above can bring true freedom because they don’t change our nature. And they don’t produce eternal life. “Eternal life means to know and experience you as the only true God, and to know and experience Jesus Christ, as the Son whom you have sent.” (John 17:3 TPT)
As slaves to sin, we got paid. The paycheck was death.
As slaves to righteousness—
We don’t get things from God on the basis of our effort. Instead, it’s on the basis of faith. It’s a gift. And that gift is eternal life. (Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary)
I am set free from “the death grip of sin. . .and live a different sort of life, a growing holiness. The outcome of that life is eternal life. The payoff for a life of sin is death, but God is offering us a free gift—eternal life through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, the Liberating King.” (Romans 6:22-23 Voice)
13. a. Personal experience Romans 6:20-22
Since I accepted God’s free gift of righteousness by faith at age five, I don’t remember much before that.
But because I wasn’t taught and didn’t understand the truths Paul teaches, I needlessly suffered.
Many of us Christians, through ignorance of the truths presented in this chapter, profess sin (our old sin nature) as our master, and we suffer because of it. But if we can understand and believe the truths in this chapter about our “old man” being dead (see . . . Romans 6:3-12), then sin will cease to produce fruit in us and we will yield the fruit of holiness and everlasting life (see . . . John 17:3) instead. (Andrew Wommack)
The way I understand it now,
. . .in the same way that our good acts could not change our sinful nature before we were born again, likewise, our sinful acts cannot change our righteous nature now that we have become new creatures in Christ Jesus. . .Actions cannot produce the new birth, and actions cannot destroy the new birth. We had to believe to receive salvation, and we have to willfully reject that faith in Christ to become reprobate.
. . .all who receive Me will experience everlasting life, a new intimate relationship with You (the one True God) and Jesus the Anointed (the One You have sent). (John 17:3 Voice)
b. “God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.” (Romans 6:23 MSG)
My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19 MSG)
- Desire to know this Giver of Life
- To experience the depths of His love
